And oh, the things that you can buy on Rodeo Drive, such as a
silver-plated Leopard on a Log for $12,500 at David Orgell, which is "an
adult toy store," says its vice president, Ali (a different one). Founded
in 1933, Orgell is the oldest business on Rodeo Drive and offers a rich
variety of gifts and antiques to the rich. Who else could afford the 1867
French centerpiece suite of three gilded sterling silver pieces calling for
a cool $200,000?
Or an eight-ply cashmere cardigan sweater from Scotland displayed
in the window of Sulka, a men's clothier. It was listed for $2,150 but is
going on sale soon in case you want to dump that ratty old two-ply cashmere
of yours. Sulka is where we learned that their $1,750 silk smoking jackets
are cut shorter than robes so you can wear them over tux pants. And the
Versace store was where all the sales associates seemed to be handsome
young men with black hair, black clothes and an attitude, one of whom told
us that the peach Versace gown on display cost 42,000 smackers, and a sale
does not seem imminent.
