Dec. 28, 1998 - Thawing out Just before arrival at the LA Airport, someone tried a bit of black airplane humor by announcing that passengers would board busses once the plane "hit the ground." Thankfully, the landing was as close to a kiss of the tarmac as landings get. Then off through the palm trees and other greenness that shrieks Southern California, with our busses disgorging at the Century Plaza Hotel. It's gorgeous, California-style, with a parade of palms in front and a whole back yard full of flowers and ponds. The hotel doors were open to the 72-degree weather, erasing the difference between indoors and outdoors, a distinction oh-so-much sharper in Wisconsin. (From top to bottom: Palm trees at the Century Plaza Hotel and Tower outdoor garden; Badger fans boarding buses for the hotels; ABC Entertainment Center building at dusk; and the Century Plaza Hotel and Tower at night.)
