Michael Apple, John Bascom Professor of Curriculum and Instruction and Educational Policy Studies, was awarded a Doctor of Letters from McGill University in recognition of his academic achievements in the field of critical education.

Doug Beard, senior associate athletic director, has been elected third vice president of the Collegiate Athletic Business Management Association.

Robert Blick, professor of electrical and computer engineering and physics, has been named Lynn H. Matthias Professor in Engineering II.

Franco Cerrina, professor of electrical and computer engineering, has been named Lynn H. Matthias Professor in Engineering I.

Charles Czuprynski, a professor in the School of Veterinary Medicine’s Department of Pathobiological Sciences, will become the first director of the school’s Walter and Martha Renk Endowed Laboratory in Food Safety.

Justin Doherty, assistant athletic director for communications, was named vice president of the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Myra Marx Ferree, professor of sociology and women’s studies, has been named Martindale-Bascom Professor.

Gary Grossen, cheese maker at the UW Dairy Plant, had his Gouda cheese named the grand champion at the Green County Fair.

Susan Heidrich, professor of nursing, has been awarded fellow status by the Gerontological Society of America.

Susan Hunt, senior artist with the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey, is the UW-Extension nominee for the 2006 Academic Staff Regents Award for Excellence.

Susan Hyland, associate dean for academic affairs in the School of Veterinary Medicine, received three honorary coins from the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps in recognition of her support of their Health Professions Scholarship Program.

Women’s hockey coach Mark Johnson will be the head coach of the U.S. Women’s National Team that will compete in the 2007 International Ice Hockey Federation Women’s World Championship in April.

Pat Ludeman, UW-Extension Family Living Educator, and John Fischer, UW-Extension Outreach and E-Learning program manager, are recipients of the 2006 Academic Staff Council Awards for Excellence.

Seth Pollak, associate professor of psychology, has been named College of Letters and Science Distinguished Professor of Psychology.

Jenny Saffran, professor of psychology, has been named College of Letters and Science Distinguished Professor of Psychology.

Steve Stern, professor of history, has been named Alberto Flores Galindo Professor.

Thomas Thielke, director of pharmacy at the UW Hospital and Clinics, has been awarded the Donald E. Francke Medal.

Anne Vila, professor of French and Italian, has been named Halverson-Bascom Professor.
