Search for new dean of students begins

February 14, 2006

The university has launched its search to identify a new dean of students, says Virginia Sapiro, interim provost.

A search-and-screen committee has been formed, and applications and nominations for the position will be accepted through Friday, March 17.

A Web site has been launched to provide information for candidates; it can be found at http://www.provost.wisc.edu/dossearch/.

After receiving applications and nominations and reviewing candidate materials, the committee will conduct interviews with a select group of candidates before narrowing the field to a pool of unranked finalists. A new dean is expected to begin sometime before the fall semester.

The new dean will succeed Luoluo Hong, who left the office to take a position at Arizona State University. Lori Berquam has served as interim dean since Hong departed last summer.

David Nelson, a professor of biochemistry and director of the Center for Biology Education, will co-chair the 14-member search and screen committee with a student representative nominated by the Associated Students of Madison.

The committee will be organized with equal representation of four students, four academic staff members, four faculty, one administrator and one nonrepresented classified staff member.

Search committee members include:

Aaron Brower, chair of the School of Social Work; Thomas Brown, assistant dean in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences; Jo Ann Carr, director of the Center for Instructional Materials and Computing; Paul Evans, University Housing director; Alberta Gloria, professor of counseling psychology; Bradley Hughes, a faculty associate in the College of Letters and Science; Lynet Uttal, associate professor in the School of Human Ecology; Mariamne Whatley, associate dean in the School of Education and a professor in Curriculum and Intruction and Women’s Studies; Kathleen Kuhnen, nursing supervisor at University Health Services; and students Katrina Flores, Stephanie Biese, Jennifer Knox and Dylan Rath.

Colleen McCabe, secretary of the academic staff, will assist the search committee. Chancellor John Wiley and Sapiro will meet with the committee and outline its charge.
