Founder of Juilliard String Quartet to perform on campus

January 31, 2006

A master of the violin and viola will perform Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 6 and 7, as part of the School of Music Guest Artist Series.

Robert Mann founded the Juilliard String Quartet in 1946 and was its first violinist for more than 50 years. In addition, he has composed more than 30 pieces performed by artists such as Itzhak Perlman, Joel Krosnick and Gilbert Kalish.

On Monday Mann will join the Pro Arte Quartet and a UW–Madison pianist for “String Quintet No. 2 in B-flat major” by Mendelssohn and “Piano Quintet in A major” by Dvorak. On Tuesday, he will conduct the UW–Madison Chamber Orchestra for an evening of Haydn, Liadov and Debussy, and “Chants d’Auvergne” by Canteloube.

Both concerts are free and all are welcome. They will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Mills Concert Hall in the Mosse Humanities Building. For more information call the SOM Concert Line, 263-9485, or visit http://www.music.wisc.edu.
