Day on Campus set for May 9

On May 9, the Wisconsin Alumni Association (WAA) will host Day on Campus, the annual educational event that opens today’s UW classes to alumni.

The one-day event allows alumni to reminisce about their college days without the pressure of grades and tests. In the morning, UW faculty and staff will teach six one-hour sessions. The sessions allow attendees to choose topics ranging from veterinary medicine to stem cell research, and from Nordic arts and literature to architecture and industrial design. Lunch and entertainment by MadHatters, a campus a cappella group, will be provided at the Memorial Union. Attendees can also partake in one of three afternoon activities, which consist of an emeritus faculty lecture discussing the lives of renowned artists and novelists Stella Bowen and Ford Maddox Ford, or tours of the School of Veterinary Medicine and the Elvehjem Art Museum.

“Alumni Weekend is a time for alumni to mingle with former classmates and recollect their college days gone by. Day on Campus jump starts the weekend – and the memories – by allowing alumni to experience the life of a UW college student today,” says WAA president and CEO Paula Bonner.

Faculty sessions will include: “Veterinary Medicine: Celebrating 20 Years of Compassion and Care” by Paul Lunn, associate dean for clinical affairs, School of Veterinary Medicine; “Integrative Medicine: A ‘New’ Philosophy in Health Care” by Dr. David Rakel, medical director at the UW Center for Integrative Medicine, Medical School; “Stem Cells for the Brain Repair: Hype or Hope?” by Professor Clive Svendsen, director, Stem Cell Research Program, Waisman Center, Medical School; “Word and Image: the Interplay of Nordic Literature and Painting Over the Centuries” by Professor Susan Brantly, Department of Scandinavian Studies, College of Letters and Science; “Emotion, the Brain and Health: What’s the Connection?” by Richard Davidson, William James and Vilas Research Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry, director, W.M. Keck Laboratory of Functional Brain Imaging and Behavior, and co-director, Health Emotions Research Institute, College of Letters and Science; and “Creativity and Civility in Design: Past, Present, and Future” by Associate Dean and Professor Joy Dohr, School of Human Ecology. The cost of Day on Campus is $30 per WAA member and $35 per nonmember. The fee includes all lectures, lunch and campus tours.
