West campus traffic rerouting takes effect

November 2, 1998

On Monday, Nov. 2, the permanent traffic route around the Pharmacy Building construction site took effect, including the opening of a new road that runs from Highland Ave. past the Nielsen Tennis Stadium and across the south end of Lot 60 to Observatory Dr.

Marsh Terrace, the short boulevard across from UW Hospital and Clinics that had connected Highland and Observatory, has been eliminated. All traffic heading east off Highland Ave. must now use the new road, known as Walnut St. Traffic coming from Eagle Heights via Observatory Dr. has to turn east or west at the new road.

Probably the most noticeable change in traffic flow is at the Observatory Dr.-Walnut St. intersection by the WARF Building. Because Observatory Dr. now becomes a dead end into Lot 85 just beyond WARF, those wishing to travel west from the intersection have to head north on Walnut St., which will take them to Highland Ave.

Two bus stops have been located along the new road at Lot 60. In addition, a stop has been added on the west side of Walnut St. near the intersection with Observatory Dr. to serve passengers heading east, and another on the north side of Observatory to serve passengers heading west. Buses are now back on the July 1998 L/LN schedules.

Fliers are available at Visitor Information Place in the Memorial Union and at Transportation Services, 124 WARF. The information and a map can also be found at http://wiscinfo.doit.wisc.edu/trans/
