Kinesiology department celebrates centennial with Poker Run/Walk

March 22, 2011

Put your running or walking shoes on and make it a full house at the University of Wisconsin–Madison Kinesiology Department’s Centennial Celebration 5K Poker Run/Walk along the shores of Lake Mendota.

Formerly held on Thursday evenings, this year’s event will take place at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 2, as part of the department’s centennial activities.

From serious runners to casual walkers, everyone is encouraged to come out to celebrate 100 years of physical education, and support an event aimed at making exercise fun and accessible for everyone. All proceeds go to the Dane County Scouts with Special Needs and the Kinesiology Department.

“This is the 15th annual Poker Run/Walk for the Kinesiology Club,” says Katelyn Gossen, club president, “but this year we’re also celebrating the department’s centennial anniversary. And what better way to celebrate than with an event that encourages family and friends to head outside together for a morning walk or run.”

Each participant draws three cards at registration, and then draws the two final cards of a poker hand upon crossing the finish line. Prizes, including gift certificates to local restaurants, bike equipment, running accessories and much more, go to the participants with the highest poker hands, not the fastest times.

Rain or shine, the race begins at 9 a.m., with registration starting at 7:30 a.m. at the Natatorium, 2000 Observatory Drive.

Registration at the event is $15, or pre-register online for $12 until March 30. The entry fee includes a T-shirt, food and beverages.

The 2011 Poker Run is sponsored by the Kinesiology Club, University Health Services and the Wisconsin Wellness Campaign.
