RE: MEDIA ADVISORY/MID-YEAR COMMENCEMENT COVERAGE

Credentials for reporters and photographers covering winter commencement ceremonies this Sunday, Dec. 19, will be available inside the Kohl Center media entrance on Frances Street one hour before each of the ceremonies, which will be held at 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. The credentials allow reporters and photographers to move around the floor of the arena.

Here are other tips for covering the ceremonies:

  • No filming or photography is allowed on the stage, with the exception of the photography studio that takes the official graduation photos.
  • A mult box will be provided for broadcast recording. It will be located at the electricians’ table to the right of the stage.
  • Media parking will be available in Lot 91 behind the Madison School District Administration Building, with entry from Bedford Street only. Parking permits will not be required for media vehicles. Media representatives should tell the parking attendant that they are there to cover commencement.
  • Delivering the charge to the graduates at each of the ceremonies will be U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur, D-Ohio, who received her bachelor’s degree in history from UW–Madison in 1968. In November she won her 15th term in the U.S. House of Representatives and she is the senior woman in the 112th Congress. Kaptur is a member of the House appropriations and budget committees and the first Democratic woman ever to serve on the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee.
  • The following degrees will be conferred at the 10 a.m. ceremony: All doctoral and professional degrees (including Doctor of Philosophy, Doctor of Musical Arts, Doctor of Juridical Science, Juris Doctor, Doctor of Medicine, Master of Fine Arts, Master of Laws-Legal Institutions, Master of Public Health); and all master’s degrees; and bachelor’s degrees from the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences and the schools of Education, Human Ecology, Medicine and Public Health, Nursing and Pharmacy.
  • The following degrees will be conferred at the 2:30 p.m. ceremony: Bachelor’s degrees from the School of Business, the College of Engineering and the College of Letters & Science (including journalism, music and social work).
  • Typically approximately 1,600 students are eligible to receive their degrees at mid-year commencement. The exact number will not be determined until after winter break in late January.
