McBride named director of Enterprise Risk Management at UW–Madison
As the program’s inaugural director, McBride will coordinate an enterprise-wide approach to managing the full range of risks that could affect UW, from both inside and outside the organization.
Benjamin McBride has been selected to serve as the inaugural director of Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
UW–Madison’s ERM program will help consistently identify, analyze, and respond to risk — supporting improved decision making, resilience, and preparedness across the university.
“Ben has deep experience in all aspects of enterprise risk management, including guiding multiple federal agencies in the establishment of an ERM program,” says Vice Chancellor for Legal Affairs, Compliance, and Enterprise Risk Management Nancy Lynch, who will oversee the program.
“We are excited to have him help build this program to align schools, colleges, divisions and departments in assessing risk and determine how risks interact, overlap, and what their combined impact could be on the institution.”
McBride is joining UW–Madison after spending several years as a managing consultant at Guidehouse, where he helped federal agencies establish and strengthen their enterprise risk management and internal control programs. McBride also spent time at the State of Wisconsin Investment Board, Legislative Audit Bureau, and the White House’s Office of Management and Budget, where he worked on a wide variety of policy issues.
“My work has focused on building practical, sustainable risk management capabilities that improve decision-making and support long-term resilience for large, complex organizations,” McBride says. “I am thrilled to be able to bring my experience to UW–Madison and help strengthen the university’s enterprise risk management program.”
McBride, a Wisconsin native who earned his bachelor of arts and master of public affairs degrees at UW–Madison and the La Follette School of Public Affairs, will begin on Aug. 10.
ERM is a coordinated, enterprise-wide approach to understanding and managing the full range of risks that could affect the institution, from both inside and outside the organization. Rather than each school, college, division, department, or unit addressing risks independently, ERM brings them together into a connected portfolio, so leaders can identify the most critical risks, prioritize resources, and make timely, well-informed decisions.
