Family establishes Zimmermann scholarship fund

April 23, 2008

Brittany Zimmermann’s family has established a scholarship fund designed to honor her memory and assist other worthy students with educational expenses.

Zimmermann, a senior from Marshfield, was found slain on April 2 in her Doty Street apartment.

Zimmermann wished for everyone to have the opportunity to obtain a college education regardless of their financial standing, according to her aunt, Kim Heeg.

“In the days since Brittany’s tragic death, we have searched our hearts for answers that we may never receive,” Heeg writes. “We are grieving her death and we are grieving the future events that we will never celebrate with Brittany. One event we will never celebrate with Brittany is her graduation from UW–Madison next fall.

“Anyone who knew Brittany knew of her love for learning and her ambition and dedication to help others,” she adds. “If you knew her, you would also know of her perpetual positive attitude. We have determined that the best way to honor Brittany and her beautiful heart is to establish a scholarship fund in her name.

“We thank you for your support and prayers in the past week, and we thank you in advance for your support in honoring Brittany.”

Contributions may be sent to “Dollars for Brittany” scholarship fund, care of the Marshfield Medical Center Credit Union, P.O. Box 279, Marshfield, WI 54449.

A method of distributing the donations has not yet been announced. Questions about donating to the fund can be directed to the Marshfield Medical Center Credit Union at 715–387-8686.

In other developments in the case, the Madison Police Department is seeking additional information from people who were in the Bassett Neighborhood either on the day Zimmermann was killed or on the day before her death, April 1–2.

Specifically, detectives would like to speak with anyone who was solicited for money or who gave money to a stranger. This would include anyone who was approached on the street or at their homes, by one or more individuals.

Investigators are focusing this effort on solicitations that were made on West Washington Avenue, West Main Street, West Wilson Street, South Bedford Street, South Bassett Street or West Doty Street.

MPD asks those with information to call Crime Stoppers at 266-6014.
