Statement from Police Chief Susan Riseling on campus safety measures

April 3, 2008

"As the University of Wisconsin–Madison community continues to mourn the loss of Brittany Zimmermann, the victim of a homicide in her downtown apartment Wednesday, we must also address the feelings of unease that arise from such a tragic incident.

"Madison is generally a safe place in which to live and work, and violent crimes of this magnitude are rare. But we recognize the unsettling impact and fearfulness this can create in people’s daily lives and in their concern for others.

"We also strongly believe it’s important to help displace fear with greater awareness of the safety resources we have in place as a campus and community. We also must reinforce a variety of personal safety measures that are in people’s control. We all can work to ensure that people remain calm and level-headed in their decision-making, and not rush to conclusions that may be based on inaccurate or inadequate information.

"Above all, if at any point people feel unsure or threatened about a situation, do not hesitate to call 911 immediately and work with police.

"UW-Madison is aggressive in its safety measures. The campus has Saferide and Safewalk programs, lighted walkways, full-service, sworn police, emergency telephones and an Internet presence with safety pointers. We also will continue to urge all students to take advantage of the safety resources we have available, through a variety of mediums. For example, a mass email was sent on Wednesday to the entire campus informing them of the investigation and providing links to safety information.

"In addition, we will continue to work closely with the Madison Police Department by increasing campus and city patrols in the wake of this incident. And the SAFE Nighttime Services has responded by doubling SAFEwalk student employee patrols. That service is available from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. SAFEtaxicabs are available from 10:30 p.m. to 3 a.m. Please call (608) 262-5000 for more information.

"We are doing everything in our power to help keep our campus community safe.
