Artist contemplates ‘Closer Examination’ of nature

January 16, 2007

When you visit Juliet Rake’s photography show “On Closer Examination” at the Arboretum, you won’t see a collection of “trophy shots.”

“I shoot quiet stuff,” she says. “I am intrigued by the texture of bark on trees, the dusting of pollen on the legs of a bumblebee — I am more interested in bugs than birds.”

From her beginnings as a printmaker and painter, Rake learned to lead her viewer from place to place through recurring shapes, colors and tones.

“If even one of my images cause you to look a little more closely next time you’re out in the Wisconsin landscape, I will consider this exhibit a success.”

See for yourself through Tuesday, Feb. 27, at the Steinhauer Trust Gallery in the Arboretum Visitor Center. The exhibition is free and open to the public. For additional information, call the center at 263-7888, e-mail info@uwarboretum.org or visit http://uwarboretum.org/.
