School of Music concerts offer music of our, and earlier, times

November 14, 2006

As the fall semester starts to wind down, UW–Madison is proceeding full tilt in its concert season.

Selected performances in coming weeks include the Contemporary Chamber Ensemble, offering the music of our times under the direction of Laura Schwendinger. Its upcoming presentation on Tuesday, Nov. 21, will feature Bartok’s “Contrasts,” Shulamit Ran’s “Private Game,” Peter Schulthorpe’s “Jabiru Dreaming” and Donald Martino’s “Nocturno.” The concert, held in Mills Hall of the Mosse Humanities Building, begins at 7:30 p.m. It is free and open to the public.

The Pro Arte Quartet will present a trio of string quartets on Thursday, Nov. 30: “String Quartet in B-flat major, D.112” by Franz Schubert; “String Quartet No. 10” by Dame Elizabeth Maconchy; and “String Quartet No. 1 in E minor” by Bedrich Smetana. Tickets for the 7:30 p.m. concert in Mills Hall are $11 general and $8 seniors and non-UW–Madison students; tickets are free for UW–Madison students with ID.

Two special choral concerts will showcase the work of UW–Madison student ensembles at 2 and 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 3, at Luther Memorial Church on University Avenue. Both performances are free and open to all.
