Offices of the Dean of Students to host safety forum

November 7, 2006 By John Lucas

University of Wisconsin–Madison students who live in off-campus apartments and houses are invited to a special campus forum to discuss safety issues.

The session will be held from 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 9, at Memorial Union (Check Today in the Union for the room location).

Hosted by the Offices of the Dean of Students (ODOS) and JSM Properties, the session will include short presentations by Madison and UW police departments and the Associated Students of Madison, as well as a listing of safety resources. The bulk of the session will be set aside for discussion and questions from the audience. Refreshments will be served.

The session is related to a string of downtown attacks and robberies earlier this fall. JSM has 516 apartments in the downtown area, serving about 1,600-2,000 UW–Madison students.

Among the tips UWPD and ODOS have been stressing in recent weeks:

— Don’t walk alone at night.

— Secure your environment: Lock your doors and windows. Don’t prop doors open or let strangers in.

— Intoxication will increase your risk of being a victim.

— Make use of campus resources such as SAFEwalk, SAFEride, free campus bus routes and Chimera courses.
