WAA honors Molly Carnes with Cabinet 99 recognition award
The Wisconsin Alumni Association (WAA) has honored Molly Carnes, professor of women’s health research and medicine at the UW–Madison, with its biennial $10,000 Cabinet 99 Recognition Award. The award was given to Carnes during the association’s Cabinet 99 Symposium held Nov. 5.
Criteria for the award include outstanding contributions to the university in research, teaching, outreach or service; a commitment to increasing opportunities for women; and a reputation for leadership, risk-taking and courage.
In addition to her duties with the Department of Medicine, Carnes is an affiliate professor of psychiatry, women’s studies and industrial engineering, and director of the University of Wisconsin Center for Women’s Health Research. She received her master’s degree from UW–Madison in 2001.
Carnes is a strong advocate for women, having established a Women’s Health Research Award with the Wisconsin Women’s Health Research Foundation. Carnes co-authored a grant that established the UW Women in Science and Engineering Leadership Institute in the College of Engineering. She chaired the UW Women Faculty Mentoring Program, a program that matches new women faculty with tenured women in their field of study.
Cabinet 99, a WAA women’s initiative, strives to create an influential and dynamic network of women to support leadership development, mentoring, and advocacy policies and programs affecting women at the university. This year’s symposium focused on the transforming power of the arts and was co-sponsored by WAA and the University of Wisconsin Foundation.
