WSUM marks a year on the air

February 11, 2003

After one year on the air, UW’s student radio station, WSUM (91.7 FM), is still evolving.

The station is looking to bolster its programming and increase visibility within the campus community. The station would also like to provide live programming 24 hours a day.

Ideally, says Talk Director Cindy Schuster, WSUM would also become a regular source of news. “The Daily Cardinal and the Badger Herald both have a great presence on this campus, and I want us to reach that caliber, too, so that people know to tune in at noon and 6 o’clock to get their news for the day,” says Schuster.

One program that may become just such an attention-getter is “The Luoluo Show,” a weekly call-in with Dean of Students Luoluo Hong, which airs Mondays at 5 p.m. On Monday, Feb. 17, Hong and show co-host Katie Harbath will discuss student segregated fees.

The station has only one academic staff member. “It’s the biggest challenge,” says Dave Black, the general manager, “because we’re staffed by the student body, and the student body turns over.”
