WIAA basketball tournament security measures

March 19, 2003 By

The same security precautions that have been in place at the Kohl Center since shortly after 9/11/2001 remain in effect for this weekend’s WIAA Boys State High School Basketball Tournament, says UW Police Lieutenant Glen Miller.

With war against Iraq on the horizon, the nation returned to an orange, or high, alert status on Monday, but fans will see few noticeable changes around the Kohl Center, according to Miller.

“Many of the security activities will be transparent to fans, even with additional measures being put in place,” Miller says. “We want everyone to feel safe and enjoy the tournament.”

Carry-ins are prohibited, including such items as backpacks, banners, flags, coolers, thermoses, bottles, cans, large bags, luggage, strollers, and any food items. Claim checks for prohibited items will not be available, so they should be left in the car or the hotel.

Small purses, fanny packs, seat cushions or similar items will be permitted. All items and persons entering the Kohl Center will be subject to security searches.

WIAA guidelines prohibit fans from bringing in many other items, including, but not limited to, stadium horns, cow bells, spray string, alcohol or other drugs, boom boxes, and laser pointers. Cameras and camcorders will be allowed, but must be hand-held and battery-operated, and there are some restrictions on filming. For a complete listing, check the 2003 WIAA State Basketball Tournament Participant Guide.

Individuals who violate the guidelines will be removed from the Kohl Center.

Fans are encouraged to ride the Kohl Center shuttle bus from the Alliant Energy Center to avoid parking and traffic congestion problems in the campus area.
