Volunteers needed for National Science Olympiad

Many opportunities are available for people interested in volunteering at the National Science Olympiad, to be held on campus May 18-21.

The university will host the 2011 National Science Olympiad tournament for more than 3,000 middle- and high-school students on teams from 120 schools across the United States. The event will require campus volunteers across a range of activities.

Science Olympiad is a team competition with more than two dozen different events that cover most science topics. The event strives to elevate science education and learning to a level of enthusiasm and support that is normally reserved only for varsity sports programs.

The 2011 National Science Olympiad competition at UW–Madison offers many volunteer opportunities. Volunteers with a variety of skills are needed. Activities include:

— Helping register teams at the new Union South

— Guiding and greeting teams at the airport and residence halls

— Greeting and organizing people for campus and regional tours

— Helping with opening and closing ceremonies at the Kohl Center

— Providing directions and assistance to guests throughout the event

— Helping with lunches, dinners and social events for NSO participants
