Virus hits some computers

May 4, 2000

A virus spread by e-mail messages titled “ILOVEYOU” hit at least 500 mailboxes in the state legislative system this morning, and has appeared in some campus mailboxes as well.

The virus affects Windows users. This email worm uses Microsoft Outlook e-mail software and sends itself out as an attachment.

If you receive an e-mail message containing the subject line “ILOVEYOU” with a message “kindly check the attached LOVELETTER coming from me,” delete it without opening the attachment.

The Division of Information Technology has posted more detailed instructions on how to deal with computers affected by the virus.

The BadgerIRT technology incident response team also has blocked campus network access to a web site believed to be linked to the virus.
