Veterinary School sponsors 20th annual ‘Dog Jog’ benefit

September 5, 2003

During its 20-year history, the UW–Madison School of Veterinary Medicine’s annual Dog Jog, which takes place Sunday, Sept. 28, this year, has become a large fundraiser for local animal shelters.

The first Dog Jog raised $400, but has increased each year, raising more than $30,000 last year.

Sponsored by the school’s Companion Animal Club, this two-mile run/walk draws both two- and four-legged participants from across the state. This year’s event is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. in front of the School of Veterinary Medicine, 2015 Linden Dr.

The event is being held in conjunction with the school’s 20th anniversary celebration. Linda Sullivan, a 1987 graduate of the vet school, was one of the original Dog Jog organizers, and she continues to help veterinary students organize the event.

Participants can win prizes for collecting the most pledges, best costume and best finish times. Proceeds benefit humane organizations that participate in the veterinary school’s Cooperative Shelter Spay/Neuter Program for shelter pets or that participate in other school activities that directly benefit sheltered animals.

Those organizations include: Angel’s Wish (Dane County) and humane societies in Dodge, Dane, Fond du Lac, Green, Iowa, Jefferson, Rock, Sauk and Washington counties.

To register for the event, pick up forms at Pet World or area veterinary clinics, including the school’s Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. You may also register by calling (608) 263-1010 or online at www.vetmed.wisc.edu.
