UW Twitterverse: We’ve got a question for you

August 24, 2009

What’s the best Babcock ice cream flavor? Campus building most likely to be haunted? Favorite place to study?

All are important questions, for sure, especially if you’re a newbie undergraduate, graduate or professional student arriving on campus this week for the first time.

(For the record, the right answers to these questions are Orange Custard Chocolate Chip, Science Hall and Helen C. White.)

For the first time, UW–Madison is using social media to answer these and many other crucial questions (Best views? Nicest bathrooms?) and introduce new students to the magnificence that is the university and the city of Madison. The daily questions will run from now into the start of the semester.

The explosion of the popularity of Twitter, along with its ease of use through browsers, smart phones and text-messaging, make it a perfect tool for sharing info, photos and news.

Students, faculty and staff can get involved in a few ways:

  • Follow http://www.twitter.com/UWMadisonNews to receive official university Tweets.
  • Watch the hashtag #uw2013 (named for the year most new undergraduates will graduate) for conversation and questions about move-in, Wisconsin Welcome and the beginning of the semester.
  • Other discussions will be taking place at #bestofcampus and #wiwelcome about important campus spots and Wisconsin Welcome activities.
  • Continuing students, faculty, Registered Student Organizations and campus units are urged to weigh in with their thoughts and provide info about their activities and services to new students, especially by uploading photos and videos.
