May 25, 2001

Jean Chagnon has been named associate dean of students at the UW–Madison.

The associate dean of students plays a leadership role in student services and helps foster a campus climate that addresses the concerns of students of all backgrounds.

Chagnon currently is a psychologist at Heart and Soul Counseling and Consultation, Northfield, Minn. Chagnon also is a former wellness center director at Carleton College, Northfield, and also headed counseling and psychology services for the college.

Chagnon also served as a counseling instructor and staff psychologist at Iowa State University. She has held a number of positions in counseling, psychology and student life at the University of Minnesota and Ohio State University as well.

Chagnon received master’s and doctoral degree in counseling psychology from Ohio State University. She also holds a master’s in higher education from the University of Michigan and a bachelor’s degree in computer information and science from Oakland University.

Five finalists for the position visited the campus in April. The others were Tammy Gocial, associate dean of students, Webster University, St. Louis, Mo.; Douglas Samuels, associate dean, University of Vermont Law School, Burlington, Vt.; Connie Schroeder, project assistant at Creating a Collaborative Learning Environment project at UW–Madison; and Janice Sheppard, assistant dean of students, UW–Madison.

A search and screen committee conducted a national search and recommended the finalists to Dean of Students Alicia Chávez. Committee membership was divided between faculty, academic staff and students.

Chagnon expects to start work in mid-July. Chagnon’s salary will be $88,000. Roger Howard, who currently holds the post, is retiring.
