UW–Madison cycling team freezin’ for bike safety

December 1, 2011

The University of Wisconsin–Madison cycling team will be “Freezin’ for Safety” on Friday, Dec. 2, to raise money for the Madison Area Safe Kids Coalition.

The Safe Kids Coalition provides car seats and bicycle helmets for underprivileged youth in the Madison area so they can stay safe while participating in everyday activities.

The annual 12-hour fundraiser, beginning at 8 a.m. and ending at 8 p.m., involves cycling team members riding bicycles on stationary trainers on East Campus Mall, regardless of the weather. The event is expected to generate more than $2,000.

“The city of Madison is one of the most bike-friendly cities around,” says UW Cycling president Tyler Van De Voort, “and a lot of that has to do with the support we get from the city’s policymakers and from the general public’s embrace of the sport. Our goal with Freezin’ for Safety is to return the favor by giving children the opportunity to safely enjoy this lifelong activity.”

For those who wish to donate but cannot make it to East Campus Mall on Friday, donations may be mailed to: Student Activity Center, Office 12, 333 East Campus Mall, Madison, WI 53715.
