UW Habitat for Humanity hosts 14th Souper Bowl

January 28, 2010 By Kiera Wiatrak

The University of Wisconsin–Madison Habitat for Humanity chapter will host the 14th annual Souper Bowl fundraiser at Madison West High School on Saturday, Feb. 6.

The event, which starts at 3 p.m. and ends at 8 p.m., will raise money to build the chapter’s ninth student-built home in the Madison area.

Sponsored by UW Credit Union, the chapter’s longest-running fundraiser traditionally takes place the day before the NFL Super Bowl and serves soup, salad, bread and dessert to the Madison community.

Participants are invited to pick out one handcrafted ceramic bowl donated by area high school students and professional potters to commemorate the event. The soup will be served in a separate dish.

The event also features raffle prizes, live entertainment, a silent auction and special appearances by local celebrities including local TV anchors from NBC 15 and WISC-TV, Wisconsin First Lady Jessica Doyle, Madison Fire Chief Debra Amesqua, UW–Madison Dean of Students Lori Berquam and Madison Alder Thuy Pham-Remmele.

UW-Madison student a cappella group Fundamentally Sound will perform.

“It’s a great community event,” says public relations coordinator Mitch Holland. “You’re helping out a good cause, and it’s just a lively atmosphere.”

The Culver’s Camp Randall Hockey Classic men’s and women’s games will take place during the event. The women’s hockey team will be playing Bemidji State University at 2 p.m., and the men will play the University of Michigan at 5 p.m. Badger hockey fans are being encouraged to attend the fundraiser as part of their game-day activities.

The fundraiser costs $15 per person or $35 for a family of four at the door. The individual ticket buys dinner and one ceramic bowl, and the family ticket provides four dinners and two ceramic bowls. Tickets can be purchased at http://uwhabitat.org for a $2 discount.

Last year, more than 1,800 people attended, and the event raised more than $30,000.
