UT presents a comic classic

July 8, 2002

Starting this weekend, University Theatre presents “Barefoot in the Park,” a comedy from one of the American theatre’s most popular playwrights.

Called one of the finest writers of comedy in American literary history, Neil Simon has kept audiences laughing for over 40 years with hits such as “Biloxi Blues,” “The Odd Couple,” and of course, “Barefoot.” Simon’s comic writing combines with polished performances to create an explosion of laughter this July.

“Barefoot in the Park” opened on Broadway in 1963, during Simon’s early career. The original production featured Robert Redford as Paul, a young lawyer who, with his exuberant wife, Corrie, embarks upon newlywed life in the Big Apple.

The play follows the young couple through the uproarious trials of life in an unfurnished sixth-floor walkup, complete a hole in the skylight, an eccentric upstairs neighbor who uses their window ledge as the entrance to his apartment, and a mother-in-law who doesn’t seem to approve of anything.

This classic comedy is directed by UW–Madison directing professor Norma Saldivar. Saldivar describes the work as “one of the most delightful of his pieces.” As a director, Saldivar is drawn to “Barefoot” as a “slice of life” play.

One of Simon’s most autobiographical works, the play features complex characters in hilarious, touching, and ultimately strikingly familiar situations. “It’s about the challenge of two people learning to fit their lives together, and itís all about beginnings,” says Saldivar.

“Barefoot in the Park” runs July 12-13, 17-20, and 24-26 in Mitchell Theatre, Vilas Hall. Shows start at 7:30 p.m. Tickets: $14, $10 for UW–Madison students, Vilas Hall Box Office, (608) 262-1500.
