Two nominated for teaching award

April 21, 2000 By Barbara Wolff

Two faculty members, Charles W. Byers, professor of geology and geophysics, and Jonathan E. Martin, associate professor of atmospheric and oceanic sciences, have been nominated for the Alliant Energy Underkofler Teaching Awards.

Described by students as having the ability to make sand interesting, Byers uses many avenues to learning. His teaching ranges from a popular 100-level course in evolution to a graduate seminar in paleontology. Martin uses a “wow” then “how” instructional technique to make students want to learn. Long a proponent of classroom technology, he has addressed the state Assembly about the importance of keeping students wired.

The UW System will announce the award winners later this spring.
