Trees and skis: wintry weather coincides with campus events

December 4, 2009

With fresh snow blanketing campus, a pair of weekend events, a Christmas tree sale and a ski and snowboard resale, seem especially well-timed.

Beginning on Friday, Dec. 4 and continuing through Sunday, Dec. 6, the UW Forestry Club will hold its annual Christmas tree sale from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day at the Stock Pavilion, 1675 Linden Drive.

Tree species include Fraser fir, balsam fir, and white pine as well as Fraser fir wreaths. Proceeds from the sale support student educational opportunities within the Department of Forest and Wildlife Ecology, College of Agricultural and Life Sciences.

The wintry weather also coincides with the annual Wisconsin Hoofers Ski and Snowboard Resale, the largest sale of its kind in the Midwest.

The event will be held Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 5-6 — from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. and Sunday, at the Memorial Union, 800 Langdon St.

Vendors bring in downhill and Nordic skis, snowboards, apparel and more. Coupled with what the public brings in, this makes for a large sale. Organizers say prices are significantly lower than retail.

To sell equipment, the public drop-off time is from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 4.

Proceeds help fund the Hoofer Alpine and Nordic competitive teams as well as the general Ski and Snowboard Club, including the Rail Jam.  It also pays for annual free ski trips for local non-profit groups such as Big Brothers/Big Sisters and Girls, Inc.
