Traffic lane on Lake Street closed for four weeks

The southbound lane in the 200 block of North Lake Street will be closed through Friday, Dec. 14, so that the old Gordon Commons can be demolished.

The new Gordon Dining and Event Center was opened in August.

The lane closure began on Monday, Nov. 19. The northbound lane will remain open between West Dayton and West Johnson streets.

The Madison Traffic Engineering Division is encouraging motorists to take different routes in order to avoid delays during the demolition process.

“The university and the city worked with the contractor to minimize the amount of time Lake Street would be closed to southbound traffic,” said Rob Kennedy, senior transportation planner at Facilities Planning and Management. He said the original plans called for months of closure.
