TIP/Agriculture official visits

March 12, 2010

U.S. Department of Agriculture Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan will visit the University of Wisconsin–Madison campus Friday, March 12 to highlight the department’s “Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food” program.

Merrigan will discuss food systems policy with students, faculty and community leaders at the University of Wisconsin–Madison at 2 p.m. Friday. The event will take place in the Ebling Symposium Center on the first floor of the Microbial Sciences Building, 1550 Linden Drive.

The USDA says the “Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food” initiative emphasizes the need for a reconnection between producers and consumers and builds on the 2008 Farm Bill. Aimed at strengthening the connection between farmers and consumers, the initiative also supports local and regional food systems, increased economic opportunities for local farmers and expanded access to healthy food for Americans.
