Tickets available for ‘An Evening of Celebration’

August 20, 2008 By Gwen Evans

The opening weeks of the academic year are always busy. They are especially busy on the University of Wisconsin–Madison campus as it transitions to new leadership in the Office of the Chancellor.

As part of that transition, a very special event to honor outgoing Chancellor John Wiley’s many years of service to the university is planned for 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 15, at the Overture Center for the Arts, 201 State St.

An Evening of Celebration” will include music, drama and dance performances by UW–Madison students. The event will also help fund need-based scholarships for students at UW–Madison.

The program includes selections from the University Symphony Orchestra; a dance piece choreographed by Li Chiao-Ping, a professor in the Dance Program; a scene from Toni Morrison’s “The Bluest Eye;” and a rousing sing-off from four a cappella groups.

“Over the past seven years, it has been my great honor and privilege to serve as chancellor of the University of Wisconsin–Madison, an institution that so many inspired and talented scholars and leaders have helped build since 1848,” says Wiley. “Although my academic background as a student, researcher, professor and administrator for the last 30 years is firmly rooted in science, I can’t imagine a world without the visual and performing arts. A great university provides superb arts programs for talented and aspiring students.”

Tickets start at $15. For tickets or to make a donation to the scholarship fund, call the Wisconsin Alumni Association at (608) 262-9646 or visit the online program.
