The Red Shirt makes Badgers look good and feel good

August 2, 2010

Bucky Badger has been making a name for himself on the University of Wisconsin–Madison campus since he was introduced in the 1940s. And now The Red Shirt is making a name for itself as well with the new third edition.

By creatively referencing the full name of Wisconsin’s beloved mascot, Buckingham U. Badger, in its design, this year’s limited-edition T-shirt from the Wisconsin Alumni Association (WAA) gives all Badgers a unique opportunity to be “in the know” on an interesting piece of campus trivia.

“The Red Shirt is a lot like Bucky in that it energizes Badgers, wherever they may live,” says Paula Bonner, WAA’s president and CEO. “These shirts are also a great way for alumni, students, fans and friends to give back to the UW community in a fun showing of support, unity and Wisconsin spirit.”

The Red Shirt is a limited line of T-shirts developed by WAA to help fund scholarships and programming for alumni and students. The first and second editions of The Red Shirt have been officially retired.

With proceeds from sales going directly to UW–Madison’s Great People Scholarship, The Red Shirt made it possible for WAA to present UW–Madison with a $250,000 gift to this need-based scholarship fund in April. WAA’s gift of $25,000 per year for five years will be matched with funds from the UW Foundation.

These proceeds contribute to the more than $550,000 already awarded by WAA every year through scholarship programs at the corporate level and through alumni chapters around the world.

The Red Shirt, priced at $15, is now available online at http://uwalumni.com/TheRedShirt.
