Teaching assistants win recognition for outstanding work

The winners of the 2002 campus-wide Teaching Assistant Awards were recognized recently at a reception. The awards are administered by the College of Letters and Science, with funding support from the Graduate School. Teaching assistants in all schools and colleges are eligible for nomination. This year’s awards categories and recipients are:

  • Early Excellence in Teaching, granted for outstanding and inspirational performance on the part of TAs with fewer than four semesters of teaching experience: Taryn Okuma, Department of English, and Kathleen Scollins, Department of Slavic Languages
  • Exceptional Service Award, granted to TAs who, in addition to their regular duties, contribute extraordinary service related to the educational mission of their department: Christopher Bolander, Department of French and Italian, and Jacob Eapen, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering
  • Innovation in Teaching Award, granted to TAs who bring extraordinary creativity to their work and have developed or adapted new teaching methods or techniques: Matthew Bowman, Department of Chemistry; Luigi Ferri, Department of French and Italian; and Andrew Hipp, Department of Botany
  • Capstone Ph.D Award, for TAs who expect to defend their dissertations by the end of the school year and have performed as outstanding teachers throughout their UW–Madison tenure: Berit Givens, Department of Mathematics; Hiroshi Kitamura, Department of History; and Amanda Stansell, Department of English
