Six student a cappella groups harmonized for a cause last Thursday, Oct. 23, during the BadgerThon A Cappella Showcase. The groups sang to a sellout audience of 300 people at the H.F. DeLuca Forum in the Discovery Building. The event — organized by BadgerThon, a philanthropic student organization at UW–Madison that raises funds, awareness and support for the American Family Children's Hospital (AFCH) — raised more than $3,600 for AFCH. Go Big Read brings Malala Fund co-founder to campus
Shiza Shahid believes girls are the most powerful force of change in the world. That is what drives the work she does alongside Malala Yousafzai — her friend and this year’s Go Big Read author — to help millions of girls around the world get access to an education. The UW–Madison community will hear from Shahid on Monday, Oct. 27, when she visits campus to meet with students and give a public talk as the centerpiece of Go Big Read, the university’s common-reading program. Registrar educates students about personal information privacy
From time to time, students may notice that third parties can email wisc.edu addresses with various offers. This happens because campus email addresses are considered public information under state law, and UW–Madison is required to provide that information to third parties upon request. Students who would like to stop receiving emails have a couple of options, says Greta Petersen, the associate registrar for student services. However, there are consequences for opting out. Read More
Campus art in the limelight on new website
A newly launched UW–Madison website seeks to fill a niche by giving students, staff and visitors digital access to information about and images of the public art they can see across campus. The Division of Facilities Planning and Management has partnered with an art history graduate student to create the site, which highlights UW–Madison public art that exists outside of a traditional gallery setting. Movers encouraged to donate and recycle to reduce waste and mess
As the mid-August downtown leases turn over, overflowing dumpsters and buried curbs contain many items that can be reused or recycled. In an effort to reduce landfill waste and increase community benefit, the UW–Madison WE CONSERVE program and Office of Sustainability are partnering with the City of Madison, Goodwill Industries, Society of St. Vincent de Paul and student organization REthink Wisconsin to collect and donate reusable items.
