Summer campus traffic and bus service advisories

May 12, 2011 By

Several new campus-area road projects and closures will begin soon and continue throughout the summer.

Starting Monday, May 16, Charter Street between Observatory and Linden drives will be closed in both directions due to the ongoing underground utility project, which is related to steam and chilled water service.

Observatory Drive will become one-way westbound from North Park Street to the Soil Science Building just east of Babcock Drive. Access to Lot 26 will be maintained. The project is scheduled for completion in October.

All parking lots along Observatory Drive will be open. Employees who have permits for those parking areas should be aware that they will not be able to drive eastbound down the hill to Park Street. They will have to plan to head west on Observatory to Walnut Street or Highland Avenue if they want to avoid expected traffic backups on Babcock Drive, Linden Drive and Charter Street, particularly at rush hour.

Frances Street will continue to be one way northbound between West Dayton and West Johnson streets. Lake Street is still one way northbound from University Avenue to Langdon Street. It is scheduled to reopen southbound in August.

Old University Avenue will continue to be one way eastbound from Walnut Street to Breese Terrace.

Campus bus riders note that the Route 80 and 85 buses will not be able to turn left from Observatory Drive onto Charter Street. The Route 80 bus will travel westbound on Observatory to Highland Avenue and into Eagle Heights. It will travel its normal route eastbound.

The Route 85 South Park Circulator will turn left from Langdon Street onto Park Street and then turn right at University Avenue. It will take University to Randall Avenue and continue on its regular route.

Detour maps for the 80 and 85 routes can be found online here.
