Student dance concert scheduled this weekend

Three talented student choreographers and scholarship winners kick off the spring dance season at UW–Madison with a concert filled with new works ranging from large group pieces to solo, tap and multimedia works.

Meghan McCoy, Kelly Radermacher, and Elena Schmeeckle showcase works in their Senior Honors Concert, “e2: enter/escape,” Friday and Saturday, Feb. 8-9, at 8 p.m., Margaret H’Doubler Performance Space.

Last spring McCoy, Radermacher and Schmeeckle received Senior Honors Research Fellowship Awards from the School of Education to help fund this concert. Advised by dance professor Jin-Wen Yu, the women have been working closely with fellow dancers and School of Music students.

As co-choreographers, McCoy and Schmeeckle will present a large group work using dancers. “I have a different theme for each of my pieces,” says McCoy. “The trio is a structured improvisation that explores childhood tendencies while another piece makes use of early modern dance techniques.”

Schmeeckle’s “ETS Revisited” is a tap piece based upon her dance recital memories as a young girl. The past and present collide in her work as well, as she showcases an original video dance piece.

Meanwhile, Radermacher has choreographed two group pieces, a trio and a solo. “I have been working with a group of dancers and live musicians to create a string of connected pieces meant to indulge the senses,” she says.
