Storm forces cancellation of late-afternoon and evening classes

February 16, 2006 By Dennis Chaptman

The threat of continuing severe weather, including snow, sleet and stiff winds, has forced cancellation of UW–Madison classes after 4:30 p.m. today (Thursday, Feb. 16), Interim Provost Virginia Sapiro announced.

Cancellation of classes is a move rarely used at the university. The last time classes were cancelled was in December 1990, when more than 17 inches of snow fell in a 24-hour period.

While classes, which include exams, are being cancelled, the campus will remain open for business. University employees who are scheduled to work after 4:30 p.m. and are concerned about weather conditions should contact their supervisors.

Sapiro urged any faculty, students or staff to “exercise good judgment and avoid taking unnecessary chances when traveling to and from campus.”
