Statement on sanctions against Penn State University

July 23, 2012

UW-Madison Interim Chancellor David Ward and Director of Athletics Barry Alvarez issued the following statement today in regard to the announcement of sanctions against Penn State University:

“This is obviously an extraordinarily serious and sad situation. We believe that the sanctions announced earlier today by the NCAA and the Big Ten Conference are appropriate, given the gravity of the circumstances.

“We remain hopeful that the pain and suffering endured by the victims in this case will not go unheeded. We must find ways to learn from the mistakes of the past, and we must never lose sight of our shared institutional responsibility to act with openness and integrity.”
