Speaker to lead discussion about alcohol issues

October 10, 2003 By John Lucas

The UW–Madison fraternity and sorority community will talk to new members about issues surrounding high-risk drinking at a presentation titled “Drink Think” at 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12, in the Memorial Union Theater.

Rick Barnes, a professional lecturer, past president of the Association of Fraternity Advisors and board member of the North-American Interfraternity Council, will address questions such as: Why do college students drink? How does alcohol shape the campus community? Do most students make good choices or bad choices when dealing with alcohol? Who suffers the consequences of the bad choices?

His appearance is sponsored by the UW–Madison Greek community and the Associated Students of Madison (ASM).

All new members of a fraternity or sorority are required to participate and returning members of the Greek community are strongly encouraged to attend. However, the presentation is open to all students and members of the campus community.

“Drink Think” is an interactive, yet serious, discussion about alcohol consumption. Rather than presenting a program that offers only rules, regulations and scare tactics, Barnes acknowledges the real-life situations that every student faces and encourages them to make the best decisions.
