Four chairs, waiting
Life moves on for some — yet has stopped forever for others, as symbolized by these four empty chairs on Library Mall. A total of 12 chairs were placed in remembrance of the victims of the shooting at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo. four years ago. The display, sponsored by the student organization Student Impact, was created to raise awareness and promote a talk at the Field House given by Darrell Scott, father of Columbine victim Rachel Scott, on Oct. 2. The bronze sculpture of William Dempster Hoard, a feature of Henry Mall for 80 years, gets pressure-washed by art conservator Tom Podnar as part of restoration. Hoard is credited with introducing the modern dairy industry to Wisconsin. He was elected governor in 1888, and served as chair of the UW Board of Regents. The statue was created by Gutzon Borglum, designer of the Mt. Rushmore memorial. Photo: Michael Forster Rothbart

Visitors to the Seventh Floor Gallery in the Mosse Humanities Building admire a sculpture by art graduate student Chris Walla during Arts Night Out! Sept. 28. Viewing the exhibit was just one of a whirlwind of arts activities, which included concerts, dance classes and trapeze artists. Photo: Michael Forster Rothbart
