Seminars to explain international-student policies

January 14, 2003 By John Lucas

The Office of International Student Services, in conjunction with the Graduate School, International Faculty and Staff Services and the SEVIS Implementation Team, will hold a pair of informational seminars on SEVIS, the new Student Exchange Visitor Information System.

The seminars will be 1-2:30 p.m. in the On Wisconsin Room of the Red Gym on Monday, Jan. 27, and Tuesday, Jan. 28. Topics will include an explanation of what the university has done to comply with the regulations, highlights of new INS policies and new university procedures to assist the international campus community.

Faculty or staff members who work with UW–Madison’s 5,000 international students or visiting scholars are urged to attend one of the sessions.

The information presented will be critical for deans, directors, admissions chairs, departmental chairs, academic advisers, departmental admissions coordinators or any staff members who have contact with international students.

Under SEVIS, U.S. institutions are required to electronically report changes in the status of student and visiting scholars to the Immigration and Naturalization Service. Any failure to comply could result in the loss of the university’s ability to accept and admit international students and host visiting scholars.
