Section of University Bay Drive closed

August 18, 2003 By

Campus-area commuters will need to be aware of another road closure and watch for detour signs starting Monday, Aug. 18. The project primarily will affect residents of Eagle Heights and Shorewood Hills.

University Bay Drive between Lake Mendota Drive and the Goodman Softball Complex will be closed for reconstruction. The project is expected to take approximately three weeks, weather permitting.

All vehicles, with the exception of campus buses, will be rerouted along the open portion of University Bay Drive to Campus Drive and Old University Avenue. From there, motorists will be able to enter (or exit) the campus via Highland Avenue or Walnut Street.

Campus buses (Route 80) will have a slightly different detour, very similar to that which they used when the road was closed because of flooding a few years ago. On the way to Eagle Heights, the buses will turn left at the Walnut St./Highland Ave. intersection, and then take Campus Drive to University Bay Drive and Lake Mendota Drive. They will not stop at the hospital’s north entrance. Passengers going to the hospital will have to get off the bus at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium or at the bus stop on Highland Avenue.

Inbound from Eagle Heights, the buses will take University Bay Drive to its intersection with Highland Avenue, then turn left onto Highland and resume their normal route at the UW Hospital and Clinics north entrance.

Pedestrians and bicyclists should not be affected by this closure. They will still be able to use the Temin Lakeshore Path that parallels University Bay Drive.

Access to campus parking lots 76 and 60 will still be possible from Walnut Street. For more information, contact Steve Harman, Facilities Planning and Management Major Projects, (608) 263-3031, sharman@fpm.wisc.edu
