Rouse issues statement regarding death of student

April 29, 1999

UW–Madison Dean of Students Mary Rouse issued the following statement late yesterday afternoon (April 28) regarding the death of student Tyler Kelley:

“I was very saddened to learn about the death of this very talented College of Letters and Science student, who transferred here just last fall from the University of Georgia. I would like to express my condolences to his family and friends in Georgia, and to those who knew him during his brief time on this campus.”

According to the Dane County Coroner’s office, an autopsy performed today showed no evidence of violence, foul play or the presence of drugs or alcohol. Preliminary indications were that the death might have been caused by a heart arrhythmia.

Rouse said counseling for those affected by Kelley’s death, including residents of his apartment building, is available through University Health Service’s Counseling and Consultation Service at 905 University Ave. The telephone number is (608) 262-1744.

Kelley’s parents told Rouse today that a service will be planned in his hometown of Watkinsville, Ga. The date and time have not been determined. It is likely that a memorial fund will be established in his name. Details will be provided when they become available.
