Rock the Vote bus tour makes UW-Madison its final stop

October 13, 2004

It is voting season, and the UW-Madison Homecoming Committee, as part of the Vote 2004 Coalition, has secured the UW–Madison campus for the final stop on Rock the Vote’s 50-city Voter Registration Experience Bus Tour on Friday, Oct. 15. The five-month tour is aimed at registering as many new voters as possible before the Nov. 2 election and increasing the turnout of young voters at the polls.

Rock the Vote kicks off on the UW’s Library Mall at noon and continues until 5 p.m. It will feature musical performances by such artists as Sarah Hudson and Dan Dyer; brief candidate question-and-answer segments; and an interactive, festival-like atmosphere. The event will offer opportunities for students to hear live music, register to vote, learn more about the candidates and find out how they can get involved.

The tour has traveled to some of the most hotly contested markets this election year, embracing its mission to increase youth voter registration and involvement via musical concerts. Rock the Vote hopes to register 1 million new voters and mobilize 20 million young people to vote on Election Day.

Campus commuters and visitors should note that the 700 and 800 blocks of Langdon Street (between North Lake Street and North Park Street) will be closed to all traffic and parking from 6 a.m.-6 p.m. During the same period, Lot 1 at the Memorial Union will also be closed to the public.

Rock the Vote is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting freedom of expression and empowering young people to change their world through choice.
