Red carpet rolled out for Homecoming events

October 2, 2003

This year, Homecoming at UW–Madison will be celebrated Hollywood style as part of “Lights! Camera! Homecoming!” – a week-long celebration featuring cinematic events, campus and alumni celebrities, and a lineup of long-standing traditions.

Homecoming Week begins on Friday, Oct. 10, with a Kickoff Event and the Charity Ball. On Sunday, Oct. 12, the Charity Run/Walk will take athletes on a course that runs through campus, follows the scenic Lakeshore Path and finishes in front of the Memorial Union. All proceeds from this 5K run/3K walk benefit the Dean of Students Crisis Fund and student scholarships.

Just like in Hollywood, cinema and star power will play an important role throughout the week at a variety of new events. The first 600 students to arrive at University Square Theatres on Tuesday, Oct. 14, will get free admission to featured films. And this year’s parade, one of Homecoming’s most popular events, will feature campus and alumni celebrities. The parade down State Street will open Friday night’s traditional events, followed by a gala fireworks display and awards ceremony on the Memorial Union Terrace.

The week culminates with the pre-game BADGER HUDDLE and the football game against the Purdue Boilermakers on Saturday, Oct. 18, at Camp Randall Stadium.

“As always, the student volunteers on the Homecoming Committee have done an outstanding job planning a mix of events that appeal to students, alumni, families and community members alike,” says Paula Bonner, president and CEO of the Wisconsin Alumni Association. “This action-packed week features a great mix of time-honored events – such as Yell Like Hell – and new activities that keep everyone coming back for more.”
