Reception to recognize and welcome faculty of color

February 16, 2017 By Valeria Davis

The UW–Madison campus community will continue the tradition of welcoming new, and honoring recently promoted, faculty of color at this year’s Annual Faculty of Color Reception on Thursday, Feb. 23, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Alumni Lounge of the Pyle Center, 702 Langdon St. The public and campus community are invited to this free event.

Hosted by Vice Provost and Chief Diversity Officer Patrick J. Sims and Amy Wendt, professor of electrical and computer engineering, chair of the University Committee, and co-director of the Women in Science and Engineering Leadership Institute. The reception is an opportunity to recognize new and newly promoted faculty of color, and network with colleagues.

Chancellor Rebecca Blank will address the honorees in a short program at 5:30 p.m.

“We now have a tradition of meeting, honoring and welcoming new faculty,” Sims says. “It is critical to celebrate the diversity of our faculty and this event is just one of the ways that we partner with Deans across campus to acknowledge the growing diversity of our campus community.”

The event will honor the 27 newly hired faculty of color, 18 faculty members promoted to associate professor, and 12 faculty promoted to full professor.

“We encourage faculty honorees to bring a mentor or valued colleague to this reception, as well as their friends and colleagues from the community,” Sims says. “Our faculty members work with many communities on and off campus and this is an opportunity for networks to converge.”
