Both doing their best to wipe and laugh away a few tears, Odyssey Program student Beatriz Mairena-Kellman, left, shares a personal story with Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Sonia Nazario, author of “Enrique’s Journey,” before the start of a class discussion in the Education Building. Mairena-Kellman is a Peruvian immigrant who later reunited with her own son. Nazario’s book is this year’s Go Big Read selection.

Nazario talks with undergraduates from first-year writing courses and the Odyssey Program about the process of researching and writing “Enrique’s Journey.” “My [writing] goal is to grab you by the throat and take you on a ride.” says Nazario.

Undergraduates listen as Nazario shares her insights on “Enrique’s Journey.” Go Big Read is a common-reading program now in its third year at UW–Madison. The program is designed to engage students, faculty, staff and the community in a shared, academically focused reading experience.

Nazario will make a public presentation at Varsity Hall at Union South on Oct. 27 at 7 p.m.
