Rebecca Skloot, author of the book “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks,” speaks to a large crowd during a Go Big Read lecture at the Kohl Center on Oct. 25, 2010.
Skloot’s book was chosen for the university’s 2010-2011 Go Big Read common-reading program.
The book recounts the story of Henrietta Lacks and how she was the unwitting donor of a line of cells, called the “HeLa” cells, which directly aided in many advances in modern medicine.
Skloot speaks to journalism and mass communication students during an informal discussion on Oct. 26, 2010. The book is being used in 53 courses this semester, from Afro-American studies and history to plant pathology and sociology.
