Big rig
Space Science Engineering Center mechanical engineer Jim Green tests a 33-foot-long hose reel, part of a drilling rig for the IceCube neutrino telescope, outside the Physical Sciences Laboratory in Stoughton on Sept. 19. The reel, with 1.8 miles of hot-water hose wrapped around the spindle, will be deployed soon to Antartica, where hot water will be used to drill through ice to create kilometer-deep holes into which strings of bowling ball-sized photomultiplier tubes will be placed deep beneath the ice at the South Pole.
