Just desserts
Some 600 enthusiastic students — not the predicted 100 — turned out to sample sweets during a Welcome Week event, “Desserts From Around the World,” held Sept. 3 at the Red Gym. Organized to share different tastes and to whet appetites for international student organizations, the tasting included treats ranging from carmel flan (Mexico) to sticky rice with mango (Thailand) to yellow rice with raisins and sweetmeat (Africa). Orientation and New Student Programs sponsored the event. (Photo: Jeff Miller)

Got Ice Cream?
Gus Greiling, 8, left, and his brother Henry Tennessen, 4, sons of Margaret Tennessen, assistant director for marketing and external relations at Memorial Union, test some of the proposed new flavors of Babcock ice cream on Memorial Union’s Terrace Sept. 5. More than 1,200 people sampled and voted for one of the five finalist flavors at the Ice Cream Jubilee competition honoring the 75th anniversary of Memorial Union. The winning flavor will be announced Sunday, Oct. 5, at the official anniversary kickoff. Henry reported his favorite was Rathskeller Razzleberry, while Gus voted for Union Utopia.
